WHY TRUSTEE MATTERS
Local representation matters in public education.
School board trustees help set the direction for our publicly funded schools. They represent the voice of students, families, educators and communities, and make decisions that shape the learning environment today and for the future.
What trustees do
Trustees work together as a board to set the direction for the school system and make decisions that affect students across our communities. They:
Set the vision and strategic direction for the school board.
Develop and approve policies that guide the system.
Approve the budget and ensure responsible use of public resources.
Represent the voices of students, families, staff and communities.
Monitor student achievement and well-being.
Advocate to government and community partners for students' needs.
What trustees do NOT do
It's important to be clear about the role. Trustees do not independently:
Manage individual schools.
Direct or supervise school staff.
Change individual student placements.
Investigate confidential personnel matters.
Promise outcomes that are controlled by others.

Prepared to govern. Grounded in community.
